Sequences for Installing and Configuring Server Applications Running on Windows NT Server 4.0

This page provides recommended sequences for installing and configuring applications on Microsoft® Windows NT® Server 4.0 with Service Pack 4 (SP4) or later. For detailed installation information on these particular products, please consult the documentation that accompanies the products.

Recommended Installation Sequences
Choose the application you wish to install and follow the recommended installation sequence.

Internet Information Server 4.0 (IIS)

An advanced Web server that makes it easy to share documents and implement Internet and intranet solutions across your company.

To install IIS 4.0, please follow this sequence:

  1. Install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 operating system.
  2. Install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3.
  3. Install Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 (without the Active DesktopTM interface item).
    Note: Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 ships with the Option Pack, however it is recommended that you install Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2. There is no need to install Internet Explorer 5 on a server running IIS and it is not recommended.
  4. Install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.
  5. Install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5 or later.
    Note: Even if you installed the latest Windows NT Service Pack in Step 2 above, you will need to re-apply the latest Service Pack because the Windows NT Option Pack install will overwrite DLLs installed by the Service Pack.
  6. Install MDAC 2.1.2.4202.3, also known as MDAC 2.1 SP2.

JL Note:

  • Dual NIC settings:
    • Disable all bindings for the external NIC.
Proxy Server 2.0

An extensible firewall and Web cache server that provides secure Internet access, while improving network response time and efficiency.

To install Proxy Server 2.0, please follow this sequence:

  1. Install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 operating system.
  2. Install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3.
  3. Install Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2 (without the Active DesktopTM interface item).
    Note: Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 1 ships with the Option Pack, however it is recommended that you install Internet Explorer 4.01 Service Pack 2. There is no need to install Internet Explorer 5 on a server running IIS and it is not recommended.
  4. Install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Option Pack.
  5. Install Proxy 2.0
  6. Install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5 or later.
    Note: Even if you installed the latest Windows NT Service Pack in Step 2 above, you will need to re-apply the latest Service Pack because the Windows NT Option Pack install will overwrite DLLs installed by the Service Pack.
  7. Install Proxy 2.0 Service Pack 1

JL Note:

  • MS Proxy 2.0 Setup:
    1. Need to include 192.168.x.x in the NAT table.
    2. Use the internal IP address for the default NT web site..
    3. Need to setup a virtual web site with the external IP address.
    4. Disable the administration web site.
Site Server 3.0

Exchange Server 5.5

To install Exchange Server 5.5, please follow this sequence:

  1. Install Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0.
  2. Install Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 4 or later.
  3. Install Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5.
  4. Install Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 Service Pack 2.
Systems Management Server 1.2

A collection of centralized management tools that provide extensible computer inventory, software distribution, and diagnostic services.

To install Systems Management Server 1.2, please follow this sequence:

  1. Install Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0.
  2. Install Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 4 or later (Recommended but not required).
  3. Install Microsoft SQL Server 6.5.
  4. Install Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 5.
  5. Install Microsoft Systems Management Server 1.2.
  6. Install Microsoft Systems Management Server 1.2 Service Pack 4.
  7. Reapply Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 5 or Service Pack 4.
Systems Management Server 2.0

A new collection of centralized management tools providing a new integrated Setup program, new interfaces and tools, and key enhancements to security, inventory, software distribution, monitoring, and Year 2000 compliance checking.

To install Systems Management Server 2.0, please follow this sequence:

  1. Install Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0.
  2. Install Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 4 or later.
  3. Install Microsoft SQL Server 7.0.
  4. Install Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0.
Alternatively, you can install Systems Management Server 2.0 using the following sequence:
  1. Install Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0.
  2. Install Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 4 or later.
  3. Install Microsoft SQL Server 6.5.
  4. Install Microsoft SQL Server 6.5 Service Pack 5.
  5. Install Microsoft Systems Management Server 2.0.
  6. Reapply Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 4 or later.
SNA Server 4.0

To install SNA Server 4.0, please follow this sequence:

  1. Install Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0.
  2. Install Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 4 or later.

SQL Server 6.5

  2. Install Microsoft Windows NT Service Pack 4 or later.
